Chiefs 49 Brumbies 34

Chiefs coach Clayton McMillan:

"We were happy to come away with the win. It was scrappy, but I give credit to the Brumbies, they came to play and made us work for everything.

"They had a plan around coming hard at the breakdown, so we didn't get everything on our terms there; it disrupted our flow. We were a bit flat and didn't have that big speed we've had over the last couple of weeks, which could be any number of things.

"But, we found a way."

On super sub back Gideon Wrampling: "He's another guy who has had a wretched run of injury, who is in a good spot at the moment. He's added impact every time he's come on. We want to be mindful of the journey he's been on and make sure he continues to be available.

"He's making a great fist of it off the bench and he's one of those guys who, if he keeps performing like that, you're going to start asking questions around giving him a starting opportunity.

Chiefs captain Tupou Va'ai:

On his captaincy role: "There's different challenges out there, but there was so much experience and so many leaders. They're leading their roles and they helped me during the week. Kaylum [Boshier] came on and you can feel his leadership as well. I'm a man who doesn't say much, I like to show through my actions and that's what I tried to do today."

On hooker Samisoni Taukei'aho's return:

"I was happy for him. It's been a tough six months. His baby, Roman, has helped him out, and he has a good support system around him. It's good when you have someone who likes to carry hard, and when he carries, he takes two or three defenders with him.

"He's got a lot of experience and we're happy to have him back."

Moana Pasifika 29 Highlanders 31

Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph:

"We worked hard to make sure we were prepared for Moana Pasifika coming out in front of their people for the first time. They were inspired by a good captain who played well. They put us under a lot of pressure, and we gave a lot of penalties away.

"That gave them access into our 22, and they showed the power.

"We got out of jail, but we'll take the win and hopefully get better from that.

"We substituted our first five-eighths [Taine Robinson], and two minutes later, we lost our second first-five [Cameron Millar] and that's the person responsible in terms of how we control the game. We had to make some stuff up on the way with the fullback playing 10 and then Jim [Timoci Tavatavanawai] playing 10. That was unsettling for the boys.

"That led on and fuelled Moana, and when that happens, the players try too hard, give penalties away and next thing you know, you're in a game like that.

"The competition is tough because you've got to spit out performances every week, and to do that consistently, you've to have good depth. We're starting to grow a little bit of depth. We started a new front row and had our experience come on."

Captain Timoci Tavatavanawai:

"We got a message to stay calm, under control, and under pressure, and make sure we focus in the last 20 minutes. We got the win in the end and are pretty happy with it.

"We lost our playmaker and had to rely on other boys there stepping up. We went individual for a bit but we came back at the end and were pretty tight."

On his nickname 'Jim': "My name is Timothy Tautomi but back home in Fiji I am just called Jim, so it has stuck through my whole life."

Moana Pasifika captain Ardie Savea:

"We got ourselves back in the game and weren't clinical enough to finish. It's a hard pill to swallow. We talk, as a team, about not only playing for ourselves but for our people. It's pretty special coming out of our huddles when we've scored points and hear them singing and chanting.

"It lifts our spirits. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the win for our fans.

"We're heading in the right direction, and we've got another tough one against the Hurricanes at home.

"When we play in the right areas of the field, things are a lot easier.

"As much as there were great moments for our team, we still lost. We want to win games and we've got to find ways to do that. We don't help ourselves. We have to be better."

Moana Pasifika coach Tana Umaga:

"We made a few errors and at this level when you make those kinds of errors with the capabilities of players that other teams have, they capitalise on them. We have got to keep looking at ourselves about making it hard for ourselves. You can't ask much more from our captain in terms of showcasing the effort needed to win these games."

Umaga was delighted with the crowd that turned up in Albany.

"Seeing our people come to the ground and people from the local community come to support us is awesome. Ardie's talked about referring to our past and those people who have got us where we are. Now, we're sharing that with our community on the North Shore, and they're getting right behind.

"This guy [Savea] probably has a lot to do with that. It was great to see the bank, the noise, they're all getting behind it and enjoying it. It's a great thing for our culture."
