Chiefs 49 Crusaders 24
Clayton McMillan (Chiefs coach)
"We always feel like we have a target on our back. We've been there or thereabouts for the last 3-4 years. We've got high expectations of ourselves, and we know that other teams will come and try to provide their best when they come.
"If we don't respect that, if we start patting ourselves on the back and lose focus of what's directly in front of us, then we will get our pants pulled down.
"I was pleased with the end result. We had a good start but got untidy in the middle – halftime couldn't come fast enough. We regrouped and started well in the second half. We got some position in the right parts of the field, got our game going and that was it.
"There's no magic potion or anything like that. We've got a squad with some depth and hungry men who want to make the most of their opportunities.
"A little bit of rotation helps because we had some pretty banged up boys last week. That's the early stage of the season when we're still trying to get that second wind."
On the record winning margin against the Crusaders
"The only number that matters is the one at the end of the game on the scoreboard. So, it was pleasing when it got some beautiful tries and was good entertainment for the crowd. But it's a long season.
"It's important you're accumulating points and respecting every game. Credit to them [the Crusaders] for bring the game to us. They're going to get stronger as the season progresses."
Rob Penney (Crusaders coach)
"We were a wee bit off, which was very disappointing. We prepared well, and the Chiefs are right on it, so it was great we were right in the game 17-all with 30 [minutes] to go.
"But we were just hanging on, and once the momentum shifted, it shifted in a big way, and the Chiefs were good enough to capitalise.
"Towards the end, we got exposed at scrum time – we've got a bit of an injury issue there – so we were put under the pump which didn't allow us to dictate terms as much as we would like.
"We tried to play a bit too much out of our own half."
Crusaders captain David Havili
"They can take a lot of opportunities quickly and go bang, bang, and you're down by two tries.
"It was disappointing, but we took a lot of positives around that first 10 minutes after halftime when we created a lot in the game. It was a wee bit of execution where we let ourselves down.
"The Chiefs played a good kicking game, put us back in our corners and made us exit from deep. We losing the collision quite a bit and when you get slow ball it's tough to attack from."
Highlanders 29 Blues 21
Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph
"I'm incredibly proud of the boys and how they won that game, particularly in the last 20 minutes when we lost all our boys.
"We had to adjust. There was little the coaches could do and that comes down to Jim's [co-captain Timoci Tavatavanawai] leaders, and in that stage of the game, Sean [Withy] with his leadership and how they brought the team together with a very simple game plan and they got the job done. It's a massive growth for us.
"I'm not worried about our mentality, but we've got to stop making soft errors where we allow teams to get a sniff.
"We've got a solid group of men who are leading from the front by the way they play the game. We grew a bit today around our intelligence when we were under pressure. A lot of teams against the Blues would have thrown in the towel but we got better, and that's a nice thing."
Blues coach Vern Cotter
"Credit to the Highlanders for playing, staying in there, and keeping us out.
"There's a couple of key things we need to look at. We had several opportunities to win this game, and we didn't. We're not getting that transition from training onto the field, and we got a little rattled as well.
"We had some great initiative, played well and didn't finish off linebreaks. Then, we turned over possession by handling errors and penalties.
"You have got to take the emotion out of it and keep working on things that will improve our game. There's no point standing up and yelling and screaming. It's about focusing on becoming better and locking it in and staying tight as a group."
Reds 56 Moana Pasifika 36
Moana Pasifika coach Tana Umaga
"When you give up 21 points in 10 minutes, which is a testament to the Reds and how they play, it's always going to be an uphill battle. But we've got some fight in us and we need to stop putting ourselves in that position and give us better chances to win.
"We applied a lot of pressure at times but need to be more clinical in more moments."
Comments on wing Kyren Taumoefolau
"He came on the scene last year for us, and he's taking his opportunities as they come. We talk a lot about being a professional and getting those habits and behaviour that you need to be a professional. He's got those, and you'll see the result of his preparation.
"He loves the ball in the air, he's quick and he likes to take people on. He's not scared and has good courage around that. There's still a bit of work in him as well but, for a young man, he can only go forward from here."
