Laidlaw backs Hurricanes depth to step up against Blues

Hurricanes coach Clark Laidlaw said they won't be reading too much into the Blues starting with two losses.

"They're laden with good players; they're clear on their identity and how they want to play the game.

"It's a big task for us."

The Hurricanes had their effort against the Drua to ponder, especially their failure to complete more opportunities earlier in the game.

"If we'd completed a bit more it could have been a different night. We could have got well on top."

And if the Drua had been able to take advantage of their chances, they could have won.

Laidlaw pointed out that while simplicity was needed to be more successful, achieving it wasn't easy.

"If it was easy, we'd just do it, wouldn't we?

"There's some simple stuff around execution. We left ourselves down around set piece launching and the first three phasis. But opposition circumstances don't make it easy."

They were prepared after two good training sessions this week, and they had two good contests against the Blues last year, so they know what to expect.

But a year after their last game in Wellington, only a few starters remained from last year's game.

That was due to opportunities. Some of the changes were due to players heading overseas, and others were the result of injuries.

Laidlaw was excited about the depth building as a result of changes for the Hurricanes.

"They're all getting an opportunity and they're grabbing it. It's not perfect, and not everything is on the money but we're working hard to try and get it right."

Harry Godfrey has performed well at first five-eighths and he also offered an option to play fullback, but that role has gone to former Blues player Kade Banks.

"He's come in this week, knows the position well and is focusing on geting his role right within the team."

Banks said he likes getting the ball in his hands as much as possible.

"I like to have a crack, try and use my footwork and speed, and that's what the coaches have told me to do."

Knowing his opponents and their skills made it an interesting debut game.

"They'll be coming down here trying to get a win. That's going to be a good challenge for me and us. They'll be fired up."

Each team had differences, mainly due to coaching styles. While Laidlaw took a different approach to Blues coach Vern Cotter, he found his style enjoyable.

"Both teams are exciting so I'm sure there will be a few points scored on Saturday night."

Banks said he had been seeking advice from backs coach Cory Jane, especially since he was also a wing/fullback player.
