"We’ve Got to Get Better Every Day": Lomani on Fijian Drua's 2025 Ambitions

Drua Thumb option 1

Lomani told Fiji media that players needed to polish their skills.

"We've just got to get better every day. This sport brings a lot of pressure and also a lot of things that can make us lose focus. We've got to play at the highest level of the game."

Development players have been involved in the Drua's Super Rugby preparation and are pressuring more established players to join the squad.

They were benefiting from working with senior players like Peni Ravai, Mesake Doge and Mesulame Dolokoto.

"The boys are really out there in terms of skills and knowing the game and are seeing the great example the experienced players have set."

Winning a Super Rugby Pacific title remains a goal for the side.

"We want to show the world that this team is not there to make up numbers.

"We want the world to watch this team and know that we came here looking forward to winning, so that's the main goal."

The Fijian Drua were gradually building depth in their quest for success.

Against RFC Los Angeles, the Drua were given a solid workout. The sides were tied 19-19 at halftime, but the visitors took a 26-19 lead just after the halftime break.

The Drua's flanker Isoa Tuwai scored in the 54th minute to level the scores at 26-26, and it was four minutes from the end when flanker Motikai Murray scored the matchwinner for the home side.

A newcomer to the Drua, Vuate Karawalevu, who joined the side from the Waratahs after playing league for the North Sydney Bears and international league for Fiji, is keen to establish himself as the side's fullback.

"The fullback position has always been my target. It's a spot in Fiji that has been lacking and I'm hoping to fill in that gap this weason."

He is keen to play against the Waratahs in the third round.

"I know the majority of the boys and it'll be an exciting match."

Karawalevu has enjoyed the desire for the Drua to be more cohesive on and off the field.

"Most of the time, the coaches let the boys lead, which creates a bond between the players to work hard with each other. This team has a special culture; it's always different when you come back home.

"You have close family members around Fiji and everyone comes to support you. It's a major difference I've seen and felt."
