The former Hurricanes captain's appointment was announced on Monday. He played 131 games for the Hurricanes from 2013 to 23, spent last season with Kobelco Kobe Steelers, and finished last year with 91 All Blacks Test caps.
Savea, 31, said it was special to be given the role, although it was not unexpected.
"When I signed with the team, Tana spoke to me about it, and I went away and thought about it. After spending some time talking to my wife and those close to me, I realised it was the right decision to say yes.
"First and foremost, I've got to lead myself, and that's through my performance on the field, and how I operate at trainings, and off the field as well. I also want to serve the brothers, serve the team, serve the franchise and serve the people anyway I can."
The team bonded with their new leader during their pre-season camp at the weekend.
"Some of the boys I'd never me so this weekend in camp has been awesome to spend some time with the brothers. Being able to lean on the great leaders that are already here has been awesome."
Moana Pasifika coach Fa'alogo Tana Umaga said, "Ardie is a hard worker and incredible role model who pushes others to be better by setting a high standard for himself, both professionally and personally.
"That stands out for us as a good leader, bringing out the best in the team and uplifting others.
"He's a natural leader who is going to have a massive impact on our team."
Umaga found settling on his final squad for Super Rugby Pacific harder after Friday's warm-up game with the Highlanders. Moana Pasifika fielded several 'unknown' players in the game and their performance highlighted the developing depth available to the side.
"Some guys have really got our attention and that's what we want. We've spoken about it being competitive and everything's up for grabs. We're going to have to have some hard conversations in the next couple of days because we've only got one more hit out against the Chiefs next week, and then we're away for two weeks to Australia."
Umaga said he feels comfortable heading into his second season with the side.
"I'm happy with where we're at. I'm not content yet because we've yet to start the season but we're progressing."
