Assistant coach Ben Smith said there were many lessons from their review of their loss to the Reds over the weekend, and they were looking forward to applying them in Canberra against the Brumbies on Friday.

Discipline issues within the game and the shedding of penalties were significant.

"We've looked at that and how we can be better.

"I don't know much about what goes on in the scrums, but I know that part of our game around our discipline and better in those areas will help us at the weekend.

Prop Sefo Kautai had recovered from a heavy knock against the Reds at the weekend and Smith thought he would be available for selection at the weekend.

"It's not as bad as first thought and he is pretty eager to play his old team. He's played a lot of games for them so it's good to have him on deck."

No8 Nikora Broughton also took a knock and is being assessed this week.

Smith said halfback Folau Fakatava is close to making a return to the side.

While the Brumbies are a side that is hard to beat at home, the Highlanders look forward to the challenge that beating them represents.

The key would be attempting to control what they can.

"We get over there and we control what we can around our game, how we're going to play, what it looks like, and the excitement of being away on tour and being able to put our game together against a really quality Brumbies team will be what we are focusing on.

"There have been close games, and in this competition, they're all going to be pretty close, and it comes down to key moments.

"We missed a few key moments in the past couple of weeks, but we're looking forward to taking those. We've talked about what they look like and where the opportunities will be against the Brumbies; after that, we'll look forward to the Force.

"Everyone's excited to get away on tour and the opportunity that brings is going to be exciting."
