Damian McKenzie on the All Blacks growth ahead of Argentina clash

First five-eighths Damian McKenzie said while it had been good to start building combinations against England and Fiji, they had to keep growing them for the rest of the year.

"It only gets harder from here with the rest of the games we've got."

The demands stayed the same. It is about building during the week so that they arrive at the weekend confident in what they are trying to achieve. They are happy with how their attacking play has developed, while their defence is also looking good.

Argentina has continued to improve, and they consistently brought their best against the All Blacks.

"They're a passionate side, a passionate country, and the way they play, they've got some elusive backs.

"We know when they come to New Zealand, they're going to throw everything at us which we're ready for, and it's going to be an exciting challenge."

Argentina was a team that could have been hard to stop if they had gotten on top early.

"It's about matching them physically and trying to exploit areas where we can."

One way they can contain them is by having a good start.

"A quick start in any Test match is really important. You don't want to miss the jump. As soon as the first whistle goes, you want to rip in straight from the start.

"We know, regardless of any opposition, we're going to have to do that."

McKenzie said there was competition inside him for the halfback role, and all had good Super Rugby seasons.

TJ Perenara is the experienced hand of the group, while Noah Hotham and Cortez Ratima were coming through with bright futures ahead of them.

He has also been working with different midfield combinations outside him.

"All the midfielders offer something a little different, and they're great footballers. It is great to have that power outside me, to give them the ball and let them do their thing.

"They're playing some great rugby, so it's a good test, and competition in that area is what you need when you get to this level."

The return of flanker and former captain Sam Cane has also been welcomed.

"Sammy's had a massive career in New Zealand with the All Backs and he'll want to go out on a high note, and just to have his experience and leadership around the group, you can't put a price on that.

"He's been great to have back in the squad and is a good man to have around bouncing ideas off."
