Breaking the Australian Hoodoo: Erasmus and the Springboks' Quest

Since being appointed coach in 2018, Erasmus-coached sides have only won once in Australia, a 24-8 win in Sydney in 2022.

It has proved a tough place for South African sides to win.

They head to Australia this week for their two opening Tests in the Lipovitan-D Rugby Championship, knowing that since the first season of professional rugby in 1996, South Africa has only won five games against the Wallabies in Australia.

Erasmus told South African media, "We are certainly well aware. Every year, there's an excuse, whether it's maybe the first time playing at a venue like Melbourne.

"We are a team that shouldn't have excuses. What is a bit different is that in the past, we would be in Super Rugby and play week-in and week-out against them. It almost feels like the Rugby Championship and the end-of-year tour has swapped around now.

"It's becoming a bit more difficult because some of the players are new to us. Joe Schmidt certainly isn't new to us. We know they will be well-organised.

"We are trying a bit of a new approach. We are flying tomorrow [Wednesday]. We trained yesterday and will train today. We will get there on Thursday and have sessions on Friday and Saturday. Then we will try to get into a normal training week."

Having had their flight cancelled the last time they flew to Australia, the Springboks are going earlier to avoid the frustrations that delay caused.

"We just want a normal Test week when we get to Australia. They are a proper team with a new coach and will have lots of energy."

Erasmus knows what to expect from new Australia coach Joe Schmidt, who introduced 10 new players during the July Tests against Wales and Georgia.

"I worked under him when I was at Munster. He is a very hard worker. He is definitely a coach who brings the best out of players. There are lots of new names in their squad.

"It will be a big test for us. We've done our homework, but it will be tightly contested."

Australia will be without openside flanker Fraser McReight for the two Tests in Brisbane and Perth.

After suffering a thumb injury in the Wales series earlier in July, McReight had surgery. His absence comes on top of Liam Wright being out after having surgery on a bicep injury.
