Lipovitan-D Rugby Championship: Will the All Blacks Lead the Pack Again?

That's the question British rugby pundit and former international Jeremy Guscott has asked in his weekly Rugby Paper column ahead of the Championship start at the weekend.

New Zealand no longer had the fear factor, nor were they the benchmarkers in the game, even before their double World Cup success in 2011-2015.

There was a time when New Zealand would have eight or nine players guaranteed a place in a World XV, but now only Ardie Savea would be assured.

"The All Blacks no longer appear to have the cache of world-class players they did a decade ago.

Guscott said, "In a way, neither does South Africa. The Springboks probably have three or four in a World XV—but Ireland, France, and, dare I say, England, are all very close to South Africa and New Zealand because, over the last five or six years, they have all had wins over them.

"In the past, New Zealand was odds-on to beat everyone—but if they played Ireland at home now, would they be favourites?

"Even Argentina, who the All Blacks face in the Rugby Championship's opening round in Wellington on Saturday, cannot be discounted."

Under new coach Scott Robertson, the All Blacks were not conclusive against England.

Guscott said, "If New Zealand gets momentum, they are very good at finishing teams off—but at the moment, they are struggling to build momentum, and those machine-gun bursts of tries that put teams away are fewer.

"In terms of physicality and size, others have caught up with them – especially South Africa and France, whose packs have big power games.

"Against them, the All Blacks look smaller, and you ask whether they have the same fear factor and can cut the opposition to shreds?

"That's not to say New Zealand can be taken lightly. They have gifted wing/fullback [Will] Jordan back after a year out with a shoulder injury, and the return of any player who has 31 tries in 31 Tests is like gold dust.

"Their centre combo of Jordie Barrett and Rieko Ioane is also still very dangerous given good ball, although Ioane, who has skills, size, and pace in attack, is sometimes guilty of being a bit loose."
