Crusaders 29 Moana Pasifika 45

Moana Pasifika coach Tana Umaga

"Not many teams come down here, with the Crusaders, their legacy and the history they have behind them and Rob's [Penney] got his side running quite well at the moment, and to come down here and do that is a proud moment for this group, our team and our club.

"[Beforehand] we talked about the fight and spirit within this team and if we could match that with our performance for 80 minutes, understanding our game and executing our plan, then we can compete against the best.

"We want everything that we could get. Then, once we're in certain positions, we know teams find it hard to stop us.

"It's understanding those things and then not buttoning off; that's the biggest thing when we score and letting teams get back in the game. We talked at length about that. We've rectified that this week, but it's just getting consistent with those habits, understanding, and having good beliefs.

"We knew they would come back. We knew we had to stick to our plan.

"When we did, you saw the tenacity and the fight within our players to get down there and fight to get over those lines. They weren't easy tries either, our boys worked hard for them."

On captain Ardie Savea's contribution:

"He settles them, and we go through our process and go back to what we do well. And when that happens, good things happen for us.

"I get to see it every day. I go to work with him every day. He astounds me with what he gets through. Off the field, he's a great man around our club."

On first five-eighths, Patrick Pellegrini:

"He's worked hard, and he and Jackson Garden-Bachop are working well together. They push each other hard, and that's a benefit to both their games.

"He had a lot to learn when he first got here, and we're seeing that coming to fruition now. He's always had it within him; he's driving our plan, getting us in the right parts, and when he does, our players can do some great things.

"That's part of his learning around being a top notch five-eighth in this competition and on the international stage. He's driving us forward."

Moana Pasifika captain Ardie Savea

"Any win with Moana is up there. But to come down here against a great franchise like the Crusaders and put a performance like that together is up there.

"We talked about starting well. We let the Chiefs get 40-something points on us in the first half, and we can't give teams leads like that, so we have to start well.

"We did that, and we talked about winning collisions, and we won a few of those in the contact and allowed our ball players to play. We're happy with that and grateful to get the win.

"The Crusaders broke us a few times and bent us on the edges. But I was proud of the boys' fight when we were breached and their fight to get back. We've still got a lot of work to do. We can't let teams get into our five-metre line. We've got to be accurate on that."

Savea said Patrick Pellegrini has helped the players realise how talented they are, and the shot to their belief has resulted in them achieving special things.

"It's about bringing that out. We had a few individuals who played awesome, but as a collective, we gelled well.

"We're proud of that performance, but the thing about rugby is, you've got to back it up. There's going to be a lot of hype around this win and this team. The boys have to stay grounded and try to get a win back-to-back."

Crusaders coach Rob Penney:

"They wanted it more than us. They went through us, we were fragile on defence. We slipped off a number of tackles and got in behind us and proved they are a quality side, particularly inside the 22. Once they were behind you, you know you've got a tiger by the tail.

"We were always playing catch-up, and you won't do well if that's your mindset. We dug it in for a bit [when recovering from 10-31 down after 48 minutes to 22-31 after 54], and then there was another error, and we got punished down the other end.

"It's given us some massive food for thought.

"I wouldn't call it that [a wake-up call] because it was just poor. We didn't have the emotional energy they did and you don't have to be far off to get punished in this competition."

Brumbies 34 Highlanders 27

Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph

"There were too many errors, a lot of unforced errors that put a lot of pressure on the team. What I'm proud of is the way we defended and then got ourselves back into the game. We worked our way back into the match and put ourselves in a winning position.

"There were a few moments; we kicked it out on the full twice, missed a touch once, so those are three opportunities to put a bit of pressure on the Brumbies, but we just put pressure on ourselves.

"We're a young side and are learning the hard way.

"We attacked together, we defended together, they played well for each other. They got themselves into and out of strife. Right to the end of the game, they were still coming. Those are the kind of attributes you love as a coach. I love the effort we keep building here."

Hurricanes 57 Waratahs 12

Waratahs coach Dan McKellar

"Games are won and lost around the physical collision, and the Hurricanes dominated that area. We turned the ball over too much at the breakdown and in set-piece.

"When they got on a roll, they've got some talent in that group, and they showed that tonight. There were some harsh lessons for us.

"Their identification of space, whether in the front line or the back field was very good and put us under pressure."
