David Havili: Japan Test Crucial in Shaping All Blacks’ November Tour

Speaking from Japan, Havili said, "We've got five games and starting with Japan, the focus is firmly on them.

"We want to be winning games, and we want to test ourselves against the best and going north is a great challenge for this group.

"We can put a good performance out there [at Yokohama] that can set us up for the rest of the tour.

Havili said having played against the Japanese in the 38-31 win in their last Test encounter in 2022, he was aware of what to expect.

"It was pretty tight towards the end, but the boys [subs] came on, and we finished well.

"The Japanese flair is what we've got to look out for. We know they like to play with the ball a lot, so we have to take control."

While the All Blacks are in transition, with several experienced players heading to London before the side at the weekend, Havili said there is still a lot of experience in the side, and the younger players would slide into the combinations where they can.

"They're down on their role if they get the opportunity, and it's going to be the same this weekend.

"We want to start the tour with a great win and we're going to have a great week in our preparation and make sure we get that right first to allow us to do that."

Havili was mindful of the experience of Japan's coach, Eddie Jones.

"He's an innovative coach. You've seen that in the teams he's been part of, and it's going to be the same against Japan.

"We have to be ready for something different, and I'm sure they'll bring that. It's all about us making sure we execute in the right areas of the field. We don't want to give them the ball. Position and territory will be big for us.

"But, if we get opportunities to attack, we want to be able to see space and take that as well."

New flanker Peter Lakai said he was preparing to go to Wellington Lions training when head coach Scott Robertson called him to say he was going on the All Blacks tour.

"I'm here now and I'm looking forward to the opportunity."

He's rooming with former captain and incumbent starting flanker Sam Cane and is taking advantage of that to learn from him and take his game to the next level.

"I'll try to get over my detail, try not to be spoon fed and be courageous in my preparation and if the opportunity comes, it comes."

Having played with Ardie Savea and being in touch with Cane, he has good examples to follow.

"Ardie's been massive. He's a great leader, especially for his actions. Anything he does, it's quite easy to follow a guy like him."

Lakai admitted that while delighted with his call-up to the All Blacks, he was disappointed that he could not finish off the Bunnings Warehouse NPC with Wellington over the weekend.
