Originally from the North Shore, Max was selected for the Blues U18s and U20s teams and New Zealand AFL in 2018.
Max Hicks joined the Highlanders from the Tasman Mako for the 2022 Super Rugby season. He made his debut against Moana Pasifika at Forsyth Barr Stadium.
He was called into the Māori All Blacks squad as cover for the series against Ireland in 2022.
