The Red Roses warmed up for the WXV1 championship with a 38-19 win over France at the weekend, the first game in 12 months of women's rugby that ends with England hosting the Women's Rugby World Cup next August.

England is fuelled by the last game it lost, the World Cup final against the Black Ferns at Eden Park in 2022. It has won three consecutive women's Six Nations titles and is the favourite to retain the WXV1 title.

However, defence coach Sarah Hunter demanded that England reduce its error count when playing the Black Ferns.

"We want an improved performance.

"We won against France, but it certainly wasn't a polished performance, and we have identified key areas we want to finesse.

"The scrum has been picked up as an area where we can improve, although we did that during the game, and it was great to see the in-game problem-solving.

"There were also a few lapses in concentration around the maul, which is easy to fix."

Playing the warm-up game with France was valuable because their backs liked to move the ball like New Zealand.

"We need to take our defence to that next level once again, as attacking rugby is their instinct. It's what they are brought up on."

England is coached by New Zealander and former All Blacks coach John Mitchell, and they have yet to taste defeat since he took up the position.

Hunter said that while England had learnt plenty from their losses before winning the World Cup in 2014, they were still learning while winning games.

"When you have a winning environment like we do now, there are still moments in a game when things are against us.

"We are hard on ourselves, and it's about improving those moments even when we are winning."

Hunter will not be in Canada for the WXV1 tournament as she is due to have a baby. But she will be watching from afar and doing analysis and planning sessions for the coaches from home.
