Top-seeded Waikato cruised to a commanding 69-12 victory over Auckland Storm in last week's semifinal, capping off an almost flawless season. Their only loss came earlier in the competition against their upcoming opponents in the final.

In a hard-fought Round Two clash, Canterbury edged Waikato 10-7 in Christchurch, giving them a confidence boost as they head into the rematch.
