A QUALITY HALFBACK was selected for the Blues for the 2018 Investec Super Rugby season, adding pace and physicality to the Auckland-based side.
Hailing from Napier Boys’ High School Jonathan Ruru represented Pirates Rugby Club before he was called into the Hawke's Bay Mitre 10 Cup squad in 2015.
The halfback was fourth in line for Hawke's Bay behind their No1, Brad Weber, and rather than wait his turn to add to his one provincial cap, Ruru made contact with Otago and was soon in Dunedin playing club rugby. Impressive club form and a season-ending knee injury to then first-choice Otago halfback Josh Renton resulted in Ruru soon running out in blue and gold.
The halfback's rise did not stop at provincial level for as he was pulled into the New Zealand sevens jersey at the 2016 Dubai and Cape Town legs of the world series.
