The uncapped Elliot was bracketed with Mealamu at hooker in head coach Graham Henry's selection of the All Blacks 22 for Saturday's match at Murrayfield, with the 82-Test veteran's appeal against his four-week ban set to be heard on Friday.

Elliot is awaiting confirmation of his first appearance in the fabled All Blacks jersey, but is determined to take his chance if Mealamu's ban is retained.

"It is pretty tricky at the moment," said the 23-year-old Hawke's Bay and Chiefs hooker.

"Hopefully everything goes well with Kevvy, first and foremost, but if I get that opportunity I'll definitely be taking it.

"Keven is a top bloke - I feel for him - and he's got four weeks off and the appeal on Friday.

"He's a great man, he's been really helpful with me.

"It's a bit of a Catch-22 situation, but I'm ready to get out there."

Elliot toured with the All Blacks in 2008 without playing in a Test, featuring as a replacement in the match with Munster.

Almost two years on, he is ready.

"If I get to run out on Saturday for my debut I'll be stoked," he added.

"It's been a while - it's been two years coming - but I'm really looking forward to it.

"We've got this saying in the team that you prepare to start.

"I've been in that mindset all week.

"It should be a great opportunity."
