“I’m due back on January 27,” McCaw said.
“We’ll start a bit of training again and roll into it,” the Crusaders flanker laughed, clearly not fatigued after what has effectively been ‘half a season’ for the most capped All Black of all time.
The seven-time champions did not have the services of McCaw during 2013 Investec Super Rugby, as the World Cup winning captain took extended leave.
However he is clearly chomping at the bit to return to the red and blacks, who will be looking to emerge from the Chiefs shadow and look to win a crown they haven’t won since the 2008 campaign.
It was this fact, along with the excitement that came from coming into the season early, which ensured McCaw was looking forward to the year before the Rugby World Cup.
With 122 Crusaders caps, McCaw said he wasn’t lacking motivation.
“I don’t think so,” he said.
“To be honest the last three Super Rugby seasons I either haven’t played or been injured so I’ve played bugger all really.”
McCaw again reaffirmed his commitment to lead the All Blacks through to England in two years’ time, but said that the Test team and other things would have to wait.
“If you look it as getting through a long season and how tough it will be you’re doing the wrong thing,” he said.
“We’ve got Super Rugby first.
“We’ll get excited and enjoy that, we’ve got a pretty good bunch down at the Crusaders.”
The All Blacks captain will spend the holidays in New Zealand before hitting the hills to get ready for the Crusaders 2014 Investec Super Rugby season.
“(I’ve got) a bit of flying and gliding planned,” McCaw said.
“Then a family Christmas in Christchurch, before going down central for New Years.
“Then I’ll be into training after that.”
