Carter joined McCaw, Mils Muliaina, hooker Keven Mealamu and prop Tony Woodcock as the select group of players to post 100 Test matches for the country.
McCaw said having Carter in the side made his own job easier,
"I feel sorry for him not getting through [the game]. He's a true champion, steered the team around for a long time and it's pretty easy to play alongside a guy who makes your own job pretty easy with him in the team.
"It was just great to see him get that chance out there for his 100 and hopefully he's not too bad, we might see him again next week," he said.
Carter said he had time during the week to reflect on the teams he had been involved in over the years.
He acknowledged his father Neville, who was on the field with him when All Blacks captain Richie McCaw presented him with his silver cap to mark his milestone, and his mother, and wife Honor who were back in New Zealand.
He said his father had him playing rugby from the time he could walk and to have him at Twickenham had been very special.
Carter said he was 'gutted' not to get through the game in the way he wanted but was proud of the way his team-mates had stuck to the task and delighted that they had secured the win.
"I was so nervous sitting on the sideline but at the same time I was really proud of the team tonight."
He said that despite a lack of momentum through the middle stages of the game they had shown self-belief and were able to show everyone what they were capable of, absorb the pressure and take opportunities as they occurred.
He said the injury he suffered was related to an Achilles tendon injury he has been carrying for a couple of weeks and he felt it when trying to push off it and while he tried to play on he was really only running on one leg.
"The decision was made to put Cruds [Aaron Cruden] on and he did a great job as he has all season," he said.
Carter said achieving the milestone was a special occasion and ranked alongside making his Test debut.
