The Southbridge product, who is relishing a new lease of life after overcoming a series of injuries in recent seasons, will look to recover and repair his body with a period of extended break in the first half of next year.
It will be the same break that All Blacks captain Richie McCaw took this year.
Hansen praised Carter eventually making the mark.
“For any All Blacks to be able to sustain a career long enough to play 100 games is a special player,” Hansen said.
“He is probably one of the special, special ones. He has been pretty frustrated over the last 18 months with injuries – he hasn’t had much luck with that.
"He is on top of that at the moment, which is great. And he is well deserving of the honour."
