After beating Tonga A on Saturday 50 – 18, the Chiefs Development started strongly against the well performed Samoa A team.
The Chiefs Development side had a scoring opportunity but lost the ball in a diving tackle on the line but got on the score board when first-five Wharenui Hawera slotted a penalty.
Chiefs’ halfback Josh Hall crossed the chalk line for five points from a line break which was converted by Hawera. The Chiefs scored again after a good forwards lineout maul drive which saw flanker Johan Bardoul cross the line, again converted.
Samoa A gained more possession and territory with strong running in close and support play by the forwards. First five-eighths Ki Anufe slotted a penalty then captain and lock Maselino Paulino made a powerful line break and twenty metre run to scored under the posts which was converted to take the score 17-10.
The Chiefs Development replied quickly just before halftime with a try to centre Save Tokula who beat three tacklers to score in the left corner. However, Samoa quickly replied from the restart with winger Faleniu Iosi running in from 40 metres on the left wing to make the half time score 22 – 15 to Chiefs Development.
After the break, Samoa A closed the score line with a penalty to Anufe. Following a period of good defence, the Chiefs Development moved into the 22 and scored from a chip kick by fullback Joe Webber with Tino Nemani being first to the ball in goal which was converted from the sideline by Hawera, who followed it with another penalty to make the score 32 -18.
Samoa A had a sustained period on attack which Chiefs A defended resolutely and were rewarded with a penalty kicked by replacement back Tom Halse. Samoa A continued to attack strongly and broke through in the final minute with a try to Samoa A flanker Falemiga Selesele who was prominent throughout the match, with the conversion by Alvin Tavana making the final score 35 -25 to Chiefs Development to cap their three match programme.
In their match against Tonga A on Saturday in Te Kuiti the Chiefs Development team secured an impressive 50 – 18 win. The match was a tough and combative encounter with Chiefs Development players Marnus Hanley, Junior Tofa – Va’a, Joe Webber, Carl Axtens, Bundee Aki, Patrick Osboorne, Ruan Du Ploy all scoring tries.
