Kahui, who has added some size to his considerable frame during the off-season, said earlier in the month he was a little bit wary of coming back from the injury, his fourth shoulder reconstruction in five seasons.

With Sonny Bill Williams no longer on the Chiefs roster, Kahui will ‘shoulder’ considerable responsibility this season, and both the centre and Chiefs coach Dave Rennie are wary about the marquee midfielder rushing back into action.

Rennie told radiosport.co.nz he was nearly 100 percent, although there was caution over the shoulder joint.

"(It is) hard to keep him out of things to be honest,” Rennie said.

“He's still got a bit of work to do on range of motion but strength's right back, he's incredibly fit and sharp."

Rennie did confirm that Kahui would not play in the Chiefs first warm-up match in Taupo in two week’s time.
