Akira means “bright” in Japanese, the country he was in born in and the sun has certainly been shining on the 18 year old this past season. Recruited by Tietjens after a starring performance at the National Sevens in January 2013, he has become a regular member of the side after impressing on debut in Wellington. A strong, bustling runner at 1.9m and 105kg, he fits the mould of an attacking sevens player perfectly. He has learnt the game quickly despite still being at school less than a year ago. Put that down to strong rugby genes – his father played for Manu Samoa and his mum was a Black Fern.
