Nick Briant

One of the senior members of the New Zealand High Performance Referee squad, Nick Briant began refereeing in Christchurch in 2002 whilst attending the University of Canterbury. 

After a series of rugby-related playing injuries, Briant targeted refereeing as an opportunity to remain in the game and keep fit and received selected to the New Zealand Rugby High Performance Referee squad in 2009. 

The 36-year-old is a vastly experienced rugby sevens referee and has performed at the highest level, including the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, two Commonwealth Games and the HSBC Sevens World Series. 

Briant made his Super Rugby debut in 2013 and a year later his Test debut in a match between Fiji and the Cook Islands. Briant has been an assistant referee in the 6 Nations Championship and in November 2017 he refereed the match between Japan and Australia in Yokohama. 

A highly respected Super Rugby referee, the Bay of Plenty local is an agricultural engineer by trade, working closely with New Zealand farmers to develop systems and manage water and waste. 

A keen golfer and water-sport enthusiast, Briant is expected to pass the 50 game mark in Super Rugby, as well as build on his Test match experience in the 2018 season.
