Kainga’s call-up to the Maori All Blacks in 2014 adds to his time with New Zealand Under 20, with which he won the Junior World Championship in Italy in 2011 – a side noted for producing a number of high-performing rugby players.
Kainga, who plays ITM Cup rugby for Bay of Plenty, made his Investec Super Rugby debut with the championship-winning Chiefs in 2013 before being named in the Crusaders wider training group for 2014. He was then called into the Hurricanes in April 2014. That was something of a homecoming for the young prop, who was born in Hawke’s Bay and schooled in Wellington’s Hutt Valley and at Taita College.
