Clarke Dermody

Southland stalwart Clarke Dermody provides the All Blacks selectors with yet another fine propping prospect. A fixture in the No 1 jersey for Southland, Dermody captained the Stags throughout their successful 2005 Air New Zealand NPC campaign. He played two games for the Junior All Blacks in 2005 and has been selected in the side to play in the IRB Pacific Nations Cup in 2007. In 2006, he stepped up to secure a regular starting role with the Highlanders for the Rebel Sport Super 14, filling former All Black Carl Hoeft’s spot in the southern side’s highly rated front row. The former New Zealand Colts played in all four matches for the team that won the 2000 Sanzar Under-21 tournament. He also played all four games when New Zealand won the 1999 Under-19 World Cup in Wales. Career Notes • Scored his first test try in only his second test against Ireland at Eden Park in 2006. • Played as a replacement in two matches for the Junior All Blacks in 2005. • Came off the bench for the Probables in the 2005 All Blacks Trial. • Scored his first Super 14 try in 2006, against the Hurricanes at Carisbrook. • Was in the Highlanders Super 12 squad for 2003, but did not get to play. Eight of his nine games in 2004 were from the bench and eight of his 11 in 2005 were from the bench. • Has not missed an Air New Zealand NPC game in six seasons. • His father Gus Dermody played 51 games for Southland over a 10-year period, 1974–1983.
