Gareth Evans

BORN AND BRED in the Hawke’s Bay, 27-year-old loose forward Gareth Evans grew up in a fruit-growing family. After playing for the Napier Boys’ High School First XV and finishing high school he shifted south to Otago University to study geography and environmental management.

Aged just 20, he made the Otago provincial side and went on to play three years for the province, bringing an abrasive style and huge work rate to his game. After three impressive provincial seasons he was drafted into the Highlanders for the 2014 season, making 14 appearances in his debut year, before helping the side to their maiden Investec Super Rugby title in 2015 and victory over the touring British & Irish Lions in 2017.

Evans returned to his home province in 2014, helping Hawke’s Bay win the Ranfurly Shield in a thrilling match. After four years and 44 games for the Highlanders, Evans transferred to the Hurricanes in 2018 and he quickly established himself as the first choice No 8. Gareth’s older brother Bryn also played for Hawke’s Bay, the Hurricanes and two Tests for the All Blacks in 2009.
