Charlie Ngatai

Called into the All Blacks squad for the historic Test against Samoa in Apia, powerful midfield back Charlie Ngatai was named in the squad for the 2016 Steinlager Series.

In 2015, Ngatai played two major matches in four days: he played for the All Blacks against Samoa in Apia on 8 July and captained the Maori All Blacks against Fiji in Suva on 11 July.

Ngatai is a member of the Ngati Porou and Te Whanau-a-Apanui iwi and made his Maori All Blacks debut on the European Tour in 2012 and in 2015 was one of the most experienced. He played in all three matches on that tour and scored a try in the game against Canada in Oxford. He joined the team again in 2013, appearing against both USA and Canada on the North American Tour, and was handed the captaincy for the first time on the 2014 tour of Japan.

Originally from Gisborne, on the east coast of the North Island, Ngatai made his first class debut aged 18 for Poverty Bay, before moving to Wellington. In 2014 he moved to Taranaki for the ITM Cup. Ngatai shifted from the Hurricanes to the Chiefs in 2013 and won the Investec Super Rugby title in his first season.

His national representative career includes involvement with the New Zealand Schools team and he was part of the 2010 Junior World Championship-winning New Zealand Under 20 team, taking part in all five matches in that tournament.

In 2014 he was a nominee for the Tom French Memorial Maori Player of the Year at the Steinlager Rugby Awards.
