A cornerstone of the Blues and Auckland forward packs, Faumuina has earned plenty of experience since he made his provincial debut for Auckland in 2007, the same year he played for a New Zealand Under 21 team that included fellow All Blacks Owen Franks and Ben Smith.
He plays most of his rugby at tighthead but has the ability to play loosehead as well, with his deft footwork and ball skills also adding value. His versatility - as well as healthy competition for the one and three jerseys - meant that in his first four seasons, most of his appearances for the All Blacks were from the bench, with the coaches using him to strengthen the front row in the second half. An injury at the back end of Investec Super Rugby limited his rugby in 2015 but he recovered in time to play six matches for the All Blacks at RWC 2015.
Faumuina is one of New Zealand’s most mobile props around the paddock and is an essential part of the Blues' set-up, enjoying the tight tussles but equally adept in open play.
Known for his trademark big, grizzly beard, Faumuina lost the facial hair for a good cause when he shaved it to raise funds for the Child Cancer Foundation in 2014.
