Friday’s Ranfurly Shield match between Otago and North Otago will be held in Oamaru and it will be the highlight of Mahoney’s refereeing career.
Mahoney, who played 16 Tests for the Black Ferns and won two World Cups in 2006 and 2010, picked up the whistle in 2015. She went from strength to strength and in her debut season, she officiated the Farah Palmer Cup final between Auckland and Wellington. Last year, she became the first female referee to control a first class men’s game, taking charge of three Heartland Championship matches.
Since 2015, Mahoney has refereed at the Commonwealth Games, the Sevens Rugby World Cup and the Women’s Six Nations. She has recently returned home after officiating at the Women’s Rugby Super Series in San Diego, where the Black Ferns claimed the title.

“Whether it’s been a pinnacle appointment, or because you’ve just reffed a good game of rugby, or reffing your best mate in a club game, there are quite a few that stand out in different ways. But this one will be the highlight of my career as a referee, no doubt about it.”
It’s a positive time for female referees in New Zealand. Mahoney is one of six women who are in the National Referee Squad this year. She said she is grateful to New Zealand Rugby for the opportunity to referee this week’s local derby Ranfurly Shield match.
“Hopefully it means I’ve ticked all the right boxes. Now I just have to go and enjoy it and do a good job.”
