The 15-Test All Black, who is the Bristol captain, has signed a two-year extension with the Premiership club.

Coach Pat Lam said he was pleased with Luatua's decision. Luatua joined the club in 2017.

"Steve is a pivotal character for us, on and off the field. His influence around the training ground and his performances on the field have earned him the respect of the players, staff and supporters.

"Steve has been one of the most consistent performances across the Premiership and he's been key in driving Bristol Bears forward with the development of our game," he said.

Bristol are sitting third from the bottom in the Premiership, two points clear of lowest placed Newcastle, who they are to play at the weekend, although the last three sides have the same number of points being separated by their points differential.

"Securing his commitment at this early stage underlines the belief that we have within the club about what we can achieve. We're looking forward to seeing Steve continue to drive our progress towards our vision," Lam said.

Luatua said his decision to remain with Bristol had been straightforward.

"It's a privilege to commit my future to Bristol – it's an environment that is getting the best out of me. I'm enjoying working with Pat and the quality players we have here.

"There is huge ambition at the club to keep progressing and getting better, I'm excited to be part of that. It was an easy decision for me and my family – Bristol is a place I feel a close affinity to," he said.
