Clerc broke news of the injury via his Twitter account.
"Les nouvelles ne sont pas très bonnes malheureusement...La blessure nécessitera plusieurs mois d'arrêt! Rdv en début de saison prochaine!" he wrote, essentially saying the injury would rule him out for several months and that he would see everyone next season.
The 31-year-old Clerc, who has scored 38 tries for France, was notable for scoring the last minute try at Croke Park against Ireland in 2007 that gave France the Six Nations, Clerc's third overall.
He was also one of the heroes of the 2011 Rugby World Cup, scoring a tournament topping six tries.
France, runners up to the All Blacks 8-7 in the famous Final at Eden Park, will play the world's number one ranked outfit three times in June, with a midweek fixture against the Blues.
