All Blacks Sevens captain DJ Forbes: "I don't think we can read too much into their [South Africa's] performances in the last few tourneys. I don't think anyone will be taking them lightly.
"They'll be looking to get their season back on track.
"We're not looking too far ahead of ourselves, we are pretty much in the pool of death. As far as we are concerned we need to get the job done from day one if we are going to put our hand up for the Cup," he said.
New Zealand has made the last two finals but been beaten in both and were feeling the pressure, which was constant, to win the latest round.
New Zealand found that all opponents tended to regard their games against New Zealand as their final, which made it difficult to hang together for the actual final in tournaments.
"We need to find ways to refresh to get the same buzz that teams we come up against are living off," he said.
But the goal was consistency that saw the side winning the finals rather just participating in them.
Forbes said New Zealand had enjoyed considerable success in the African tournament and it also got a lot of support from local fans. The side also made it a policy to get out among the less fortunate communities in the area of the tournament to give out some food and water to those without the chance to go to the games.
Part of the enjoyment of New Zealand's Sevens success was in the challenge of having to take tournaments right down to the wire, he said.
"I guarantee that if you look back over the footage every game that we have won [in finals], or the majority of them, have gone right down to the wire, he said, while adding that in South African tournaments there was a connection with the history between the two countries in the 15-a-side version of the game.
"When we come here we think about everything that has gone before us," he said.
