The Chiefs franchise confirmed Lauaki fell asleep at the wheel south of Huntly while driving to Auckland. Alcohol was not a factor, the Chiefs said in a statement.

Ambulance staff attended the scene with Lauaki suffering a sore arm as a result of the accident.

His arm is swollen and will continue to be assessed by Chiefs medical staff.

The team's chief executive Gary Dawson said: "Understandably Sione is shaken by this accident and we are all thankful it was not more serious."

The Chiefs, out of semifinals contention, will face the Hurricanes in Wellington on Saturday.
